Gross amount (inc VAT)€123.00

How to calculate VAT

VAT is always charged on the net amount, the price before VAT. Depending on which amount you have, use one of the two formulas below.

Adding VAT to a net amount

Net amount × 23% = VAT. Net amount × 1.23 = gross amount (at the standard rate).

Example: €100.00 × 0.23 = €23.00 VAT. Gross amount: €100.00 + €23.00 = €123.00.

Removing VAT from a gross amount

Gross amount ÷ 1.23 = net amount. The difference between the two is the VAT.

Example: €123.00 ÷ 1.23 = €100.00 net. VAT: €123.00 − €100.00 = €23.00.

How much of a gross price is VAT?

The rate applies to the net amount, not to the gross price. That is why 23% VAT makes up only 18.70% of the gross price. A common mistake is to deduct 23% from the gross price.

VAT rate Net → gross: multiply by Gross → net: divide by VAT share of the gross price
23% 1.23 1.23 18.70%
13.5% 1.135 1.135 11.89%
9% 1.09 1.09 8.26%
4.8% 1.048 1.048 4.58%

Rounding

The calculator rounds amounts to the nearest cent, i.e. two decimal places. The gross amount is always the sum of the rounded net amount and the rounded VAT, just as on an invoice.

Rates checked: October 2026. This calculator gives an indicative result and does not replace advice from an accountant.

Frequently asked questions

How do I add 23% VAT?

Multiply the net amount by 1.23. Example: €200.00 × 1.23 = €246.00, of which €46.00 is VAT.

How do I remove VAT from a gross amount?

Divide the gross amount by 1.23 (at the standard rate). Example: €246.00 ÷ 1.23 = €200.00 net, so the VAT is €46.00.

How much VAT is in €100.00 including VAT?

At 23%, a gross price of €100.00 contains €18.70 VAT and €81.30 net. At 13.5%, the VAT is €11.89. At 9%, the VAT is €8.26. At 4.8%, the VAT is €4.58.

What are the VAT rates in Ireland?

The standard rate is 23%. The reduced rates are 13.5% and 9%, and there is a special 4.8% livestock rate. Many basic goods, such as most food and books, are zero-rated (0%).

Why is 23% VAT not 23% of the gross price?

The rate applies to the net amount. So the VAT is 18.70% of the gross price: 23 ÷ 123 = 0.1870.

How does the calculator round amounts?

To the nearest cent, i.e. two decimal places. The gross amount is always the sum of the rounded net amount and the rounded VAT.
